How to Survive your First Driving Lesson // Lucyy Writes

Recently I made the decision to book my driving lessons after having put them off for so long. I always imagined I'd start learning straight after turning 17 with my parents still willing to pay for them as they did for my brother. When it came to looking for instructors I found every single excuse to put them off with my anxiety slowly eating away & taking over. It's one of the worst mistakes to make, the fear only gets worse the longer you leave it. At the grand age of 20, 21 in July I want/need to pass before then and get crossing more things off of my list. My lessons are two hours long - which I'm sure at first will be the longest two hours of my life. I really want a Fiat 500 in either mint or lilac...or a dreamy Beetle - I have years of watching OTH to thank for that one.

The Night before;
If you're looking forward to your lessons you probably aren't reading this post and therefore all the following will be aimed at those who hate the thought of learning to drive with a complete stranger for set hours each week. Forcing conversation and think you'll be baffled at the amount to take in? If your lesson is early like mine prepare what you're wearing, something comfortable with sensible flat shoes. Females don't have pockets so I'm taking my Modalu Pippa Purse to shove my licence, keys, phone and papers in. You won't need it after that. Chewing gum & rescue remedy will also be your best friend. I also spray a little extra perfume onto a scarf/snood I'm wearing - I'm a cold little thing okay.

Anxiety riddled like me? Start running yourself a nice bubble bath with your favourite bath oil or in my case LUSH. We went a little crazy in the Lush Boxing Day sale, whatever storage option I open in my room has Lush flying out at me. Grab all your other pamper goodies, don't forget the face mask and put on an episode or two of Gossip Girl. Out of the bath? Snuggle down into fresh bedding that's been spritzed with a relaxing room & pillow fragrance - we all know Neom is my favourite.

The Morning of the first lesson;
Having Harry helped a lot, I got ready and took him for a walk so I wasn't waiting around worrying about how I was going to get on & who'd I'd end up with. Grabbed a rescue remedy chew and I was out the door. Harry was watching from the living room window & waiting for me when I came back.

The Driving Lesson;
If you're reading this post you'll see that I've survived the first lesson and possibly more. The panic dies down after a few lessons, though I did experience an awful instructor and switched. He turned out to be very sarcastic and always cancelling. But on that lesson before I knew it I'm in the driving seat, setting up the car (my most hated bit) and going through a hefty chunk of the learner book before moving off. My first lesson wasn't brilliant nor was it bad, it's okay that I'm terrible at going straight however I barely stalled and didn't swear, positives in everything right? Here's to driving straight, booking twice weekly lessons and god forbid being allowed on the roads alone.
